McClymonds Gym Dedication
Oakland is home to many prominent activists, athletes, and artists. In its rich history it has birthed historic movements that shaped society and shifted culture. Bill Russell was one of west oakland’s very own, who arose from adversity, and made something of himself through the toughness and grit that his hometown is known for. From Defremery park where his love for basketball was born, to McClymonds highschool where his skills were honed, this special city brought forth a special person. Like a rose from concrete, Bill went on to accomplish amazing feats and put west Oakland on the map. Now the place that built such a man is honoring the legacy that he created. Curry Brand, Under Armour, and The Bill Russell 6 Foundation have teamed up as McClymonds High School looked to cement his name in west Oakland history forever with a gym dedication. Hundreds gathered to honor the legacy of what Bill means to the high school, to give back and remember someone who gave so much to the game of basketball as well as Oakland. Together Under Armour, the Bill Russell 6 Foundation created the Bill Russell MVP scholarship for the students of McClymonds to rise up from their circumstances the same way that Bill did, to give those looking to make a difference a better opportunity. All contributions go toward initiatives like this to further Bill’s legacy on giving back to future generations. Encouraging them to transcend their realities and create their own legacy for years to come.
